The Christ of the Mercy is a colossal statue of Jesus Christ that overlooks San Juan del Sur, the bay and the beach. The statue is an image of the Jesus of the Mercy on a hill located in the north end of San Juan del Sur. The complete structure reaches 24 meters in height, making it one of the 10 largest Jesus statues in the world.. With the right index finger the Christ points toward to the south. Erected in 2009, it’s now a landmark and geographical reference point for the town.
To best appreciate the size of the San Juan del Sur statue it needs to be compared to other famous Christ statues. The famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro was built in 1931 and is 38 meters, including the pedestal. The Christ the King statue in Poland is 33 meters, with a 3-meter crown. Counting the mound it’s 52.5 meters.
