San Juan del Sur is a small town on the Pacific Ocean coast of Nicaragua. It is located 140 kilometers (87 mile) south of Managua. Its population is approximately 15,500, made up of Nicaraguan families engaged in fishing or the tourism industry, and expats from the United States, Canada and Europe.
San Juan del Sur is popular among surfers, Nicaraguan families and foreign tourists. Ironically the surfing at San Juan del Sur is not great, but it is fantastic at beaches to the north and south. So surfers stay in the town and shuttle to the nearby beaches with better waves.
The long, sandy beach of San Juan del Sur is a crescent shaped bay. A statue of the Christ of the Mercy sits above town on the northern end of the bay.
The town of San Juan del Sur is near the site where Survivor: Nicaragua and Survivor: Redemption Island were filmed. Those seasons aired in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The 29th U.S. Survivor season, Survivor: San Juan del Sur was also filmed there in 2014, as was Season 30, Survivor: Worlds Apart, which aired in 2015.
The Experience Nica Tours group will be staying La Posada Azul for two nights while we explore the coast and visit a couple of surfing beaches. No worry if you do not know how to surf, group members can take lessons or opt to just relax, or hang out in the rancho bars that dot the surfing beaches.
While in San Juan del Sur group members will spend a lot of time on the beach. However, we’ll go horseback riding druning the day. In the afternoon we’ll go on an easy walk up to the iconic Christ of the Mercy statue on the hilltop overlooking the town, beach and bay. From the lookout at the base of the statue, the sunset over the Pacific is spectacular.
What you’ll need for a this and most activities is shoes, preferably hiking boots or high top running shoes, lightweight clothes you don’t mind getting wet and soiled, a camera for sure, water-proof if you have one, bottled water, mosquito repellent and sunblock. Everything else is supplied by the tour operator.
Dinner will be at a beach front restaurant, as will enjoying a couple of evening beverages.
